Surfer Catches a Wave

Every year, a total of 44 men and 16 women compete for the highly prestigious title of 'best championship surfer' at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coasts. The competition - which also doubles up as the start of the annual ASP World Tour - usually occurs at Snapper Rocks Beach, in Collangata, at the southern end of Queensland's Gold Coast. It has been known, however, to relocate to other nearby locations should the waves not reach the desired height and strength. Fans can expect the odd lay-day (no competition) during the waiting period, but waves in Australia are typically healthy throughout February and March, with soaring temperatures and impressive swells, so there's always plenty of top-class surfing action.
