New rules for surfing schools 2010The main issue up for grabs at a volusia County meeting tonight in Daytona Beach: Should Volusia County start licensing surf schools?
Surf schools are popular at several beaches along the coast and some do a great business as summer camps.
But they don’t operate with any help, or any licensing from the county.
Volusia County does have contracts for the main beach vendors, selling food, renting chairs and umbrellas, and renting golf carts. There is an available contract for windsurfing and other water sports. And the county regular approves permits for special beach events, especially ones in which alcohol is requested.
So there is a question brewing on what policy should the county have on surf schools — should it begin licensing them or setting up exclusive contracts?
That’s the main topic before the Volusia County Beach Policy Advisory Board which will meet in Daytona Beach, at the new lifeguard headquarters, 515 S. Atlantic Ave., near Sun Splash Park, at 5:30 pm. There is an audio feed available online if you can’t go to the meeting (and the audio will be available later.) The board will discuss the issue, but any rule changes would have to be approved by the Volusia County Council.
